Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Surging Heart Device Demand

Medtronic elevates fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by robust heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial outlook upward, citing strong demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced on Tuesday that it expects annual organic revenue growth to range from 7.25% to 7.75%, an increase from the previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, Medtronic adjusted the lower end of its per-share profit forecast to $5.94, up from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6.
Strategic Investments in Heart Technology
Medtronic is making significant investments to bolster its position in the cardiovascular market. The company has committed $80 million to heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to purchase it for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the growing penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets, noting that it currently stands at less than 1%. He emphasized that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo system, enhancing the company's offering in this high-growth segment.
Robust Cardiovascular Segment Growth
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely fueled by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge. This portfolio is integral in treating irregular heart rhythms, a market with expanding demand.
The company's financial performance for the quarter exceeded expectations, with an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion. This surpassed analyst estimates compiled by LSEG, which predicted $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue.
Financial Strategy and Market Outlook
Medtronic's financial strategy includes managing costs and optimizing returns. CFO Thierry Pieton mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, though future refunds are not factored into the current outlook.
Martha expressed confidence in the company's diverse business performance and the contributions from new growth platforms. He emphasized Medtronic's focus on high-growth segments with large patient populations, aiming to expand its footprint in the medtech industry.
