Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Surge in Heart Device Demand

Medtronic ups 2027 forecasts, driven by heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial forecasts upwards, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, Medtronic has adjusted the lower end of its per-share profit forecast to $5.94, up from $5.90, while maintaining the upper end at $6.
Strategic Investments and Market Growth
The medical technology giant is bolstering its portfolio through strategic investments, including an $80 million investment in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Medtronic has also invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the importance of these investments, noting the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's Hugo system.
Martha emphasized the company's focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, targeting large patient pools and substantial market opportunities. The decision aligns with Medtronic's broader strategy of expanding its presence in emerging markets, where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1%.
Cardiovascular Segment Drives Performance
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. The growth was largely fueled by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge in demand. This technology is primarily used to treat irregular heart rhythms, contributing significantly to the company's overall performance.
In the latest quarter, Medtronic achieved an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Financial Outlook and Market Confidence
Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly covered the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the current outlook. Despite this, the company remains confident in its financial projections, supported by strong quarterly results and the breadth of performance across its business units.
With the increased adoption of new technologies and a steady demand for surgeries, Medtronic continues to position itself as a leader in the medtech industry. The company's strategic investments and focus on high-growth areas are expected to drive sustained growth over the coming years.
