AI Summary

Medtronic boosts its fiscal 2027 outlook, driven by increased demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, citing strong demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%, while adjusting the lower end of its per-share profit forecast to $5.94.

Strategic Investments to Drive Growth

Alongside its forecast adjustments, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, obtaining distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the complementarity of Cornerstone's Sentire device with Medtronic's Hugo system, particularly in emerging markets where robotic surgery penetration remains under 1%.

Financial Performance and Market Dynamics

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by an 88% rise in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, used for treating irregular heart rhythms. The company's adjusted quarterly per-share profit was $1.45, on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data.

Medtronic's CFO, Thierry Pieton, noted that the company benefited from tariff refunds that nearly offset duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future financial projections.

Focus on High-Growth Medical Segments

CEO Martha emphasized Medtronic's commitment to expanding in high-growth sectors of the medical technology landscape. "We are prioritizing segments with large patient pools and substantial growth potential," he stated, underscoring the company's steady pace of mergers and acquisitions.

As Medtronic continues to invest in innovative technologies and expand its global footprint, the company remains optimistic about capturing a larger share of the burgeoning market for advanced medical devices.
