Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Surge in Heart Device Demand

Medtronic boosts 2027 forecasts, fueled by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 forecasts upward, driven by increased demand for heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical technology company announced on Tuesday that it has raised the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper limit at $6. Additionally, Medtronic now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
Medtronic is bolstering its portfolio with significant investments. The company has committed $80 million to Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's existing Hugo device.
Financial Performance and Market Dynamics
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely attributed to its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge. The company reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share on sales of $9.55 billion, according to LSEG data.
Challenges and Future Outlook
Despite the positive outlook, Medtronic's finance chief Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future projections. Martha emphasized the company's focus on high-growth segments in the medtech industry, targeting large patient pools and significant market opportunities.
As Medtronic continues to expand its footprint in the medical technology sector, the company is poised to benefit from the increasing adoption of innovative heart devices and robotic surgical systems across global markets.
