Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Surge in Heart Device Demand

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by rising demand for heart devices and strategic investments in medtech.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial outlook upwards, fueled by increasing demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced on Tuesday that it expects its annual organic revenue growth to range between 7.25% and 7.75%, a rise from its previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has been increased to $5.94 from $5.90, while the upper end remains at $6.
CEO Geoff Martha expressed confidence in Medtronic's performance during a post-earnings call, highlighting the broad contributions from various business segments and new growth platforms. The company's cardiovascular segment experienced a significant boost, with quarterly sales jumping 19.5% to $3.93 billion. This surge was largely driven by an 88% growth in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, a technology used to treat irregular heart rhythms.
Strategic Investments in Medtech
In addition to its positive financial outlook, Medtronic is making strategic investments to strengthen its position in the medical technology sector. The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
Martha noted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets is currently under 1%, indicating significant growth potential. He emphasized that Cornerstone's Sentire robotic system complements Medtronic's existing Hugo device, aligning with the company's strategy to prioritize high-growth segments with large patient pools.
Financial Performance and Market Dynamics
Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company's finance chief, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that Medtronic received tariff refunds covering most of the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds have not been factored into the financial outlook.
The increased adoption of new medical technologies and a robust demand for surgeries are driving growth across the medtech industry. Medtronic's strategic focus on expanding its portfolio in high-growth areas is expected to further bolster its market position and financial performance in the coming years.
