AI Summary

Medtronic boosts 2027 projections due to rising heart device demand, investing in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.

Medtronic has raised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth forecast, citing a surge in demand for its heart devices utilized in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previously projected 6.75% to 7.25% range. This optimistic outlook is driven by the strong performance of its cardiovascular segment, which saw quarterly sales climb 19.5% to $3.93 billion.

Strategic Investments in Heart and Robotic Technologies

In addition to revising its forecasts, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. The move underscores Medtronic's focus on expanding its capabilities in heart treatment technologies. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's existing Hugo device, noting the significant growth potential in soft tissue robotic surgery, particularly in emerging markets where penetration remains below 1%.

Financial Performance and Market Trends

Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company's strong performance is attributed to the increasing adoption of newer medical technologies and a robust demand for surgeries. The pulsed field ablation portfolio, used to treat irregular heart rhythms, experienced an 88% growth, significantly contributing to the cardiovascular segment's revenue.

Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into the company's future projections. The firm has maintained the upper end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per share profit forecast at $6, while raising the lower end to $5.94 from $5.90.

Focus on High-Growth Medical Segments

CEO Geoff Martha emphasized Medtronic's strategic focus on high-growth segments within the medical technology sector, which are expected to yield substantial patient pools and market opportunities. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A, prioritizing segments that not only exhibit high growth but also represent large patient pools," Martha remarked during a post-earnings call. This strategic approach aims to ensure Medtronic remains at the forefront of medical innovation and meets the evolving needs of healthcare providers and patients worldwide.
