Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Surge in Heart Device Demand

Medtronic boosts 2027 revenue forecasts, driven by high demand for cardiovascular devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue projections upward, buoyed by robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical technology company announced this strategic shift in response to increasing adoption of advanced medical technologies and a surge in surgical demand.
Strategic Investments and Growth
In a significant move, Medtronic has committed $80 million to heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, it has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. These investments align with Medtronic's focus on expanding its presence in high-growth segments of the medical technology field.
CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the company’s strategic focus during a post-earnings call, emphasizing the importance of diversifying growth platforms. "What gives us confidence is not simply the strength of the quarter, but importantly, the breadth of performance across our businesses," Martha stated. He also noted the potential of Cornerstone's Sentire device to complement Medtronic's Hugo robotic surgery system, particularly in emerging markets where robotic surgery penetration remains below 1%.
Financial Performance and Outlook
Medtronic has adjusted the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per share profit forecast from $5.90 to $5.94, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. The company now anticipates an annual organic revenue growth rate between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous 6.75% to 7.25% projection.
Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, reported that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the revised outlook.
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment experienced a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was driven by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is utilized to treat irregular heart rhythms. The company also reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.45 per share on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, Medtronic remains committed to prioritizing high-growth segments within medtech, targeting large patient populations. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A," Martha noted, underscoring the company's strategic approach to expansion through mergers and acquisitions.
With ongoing investments in innovative technologies and a focus on expanding market reach, Medtronic appears well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for advanced cardiovascular devices and robotic surgical systems.
