Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Surge in Heart Device Demand

Medtronic projects increased revenue and profits for fiscal 2027, driven by high demand for heart devices.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 projections upwards, citing robust demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth of 7.25% to 7.75%, a rise from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. The adjustment comes as the firm experiences heightened adoption of its heart devices, particularly those used in complex cardiovascular procedures.
Strategic Investments and Expansion Plans
Medtronic is actively investing in future growth areas. It announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device company, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets. CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the potential of robotic surgery in emerging markets, where penetration remains below 1%.
Financial Performance and Market Outlook
In the latest quarter, Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms and saw an 88% surge. The company reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.45 per share on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue, according to data from LSEG.
Medtronic also raised the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per share profit forecast to $5.94, while maintaining the upper end at $6. This positive outlook is further supported by tariff refunds received during the quarter, although future refunds have not been factored into the company's projections.
Focus on High-Growth Segments
CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the company's ongoing strategy of prioritizing high-growth segments within the medtech industry. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A," Martha stated, underscoring the focus on large patient pools and significant market segments. This strategy aligns with Medtronic's broader goal of strengthening its position in the global medical device market.
As Medtronic continues to capitalize on the increasing demand for its innovative cardiovascular solutions, the company remains poised for sustained growth and profitability in the coming years.
