Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Strong Heart Device Sales

Medtronic increases fiscal 2027 revenue forecast, driven by robust demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts upward, citing heightened demand for its cardiac devices. The company, a leader in medical technology, reported significant growth in its cardiovascular segment, with sales climbing 19.5% to $3.93 billion, largely due to its pulsed field ablation products for treating irregular heart rhythms.
Strategic Investments in Heart Device Sector
In addition to its revised forecasts, Medtronic announced a substantial investment of $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option to purchase the company for $210 million. The firm also committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
Medtronic's CEO, Geoff Martha, emphasized the company's focus on high-growth segments within the medical technology industry. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A," Martha stated, pointing to the strategic importance of targeting large patient pools and growth segments.
Revenue and Profit Projections
Medtronic raised the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous range of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Financial contributions from newer growth platforms across Medtronic's business lines have bolstered these projections. CFO Thierry Pieton noted that tariff refunds nearly offset the duties paid in the quarter, although future refunds are not included in the current outlook.
Performance and Market Opportunities
Medtronic's quarterly sales and profit figures exceeded expectations, with adjusted earnings per share at $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 on $9.55 billion. The company sees significant opportunities in emerging markets, particularly in the field of soft tissue robotic surgery, where penetration remains below 1%.
The integration of Cornerstone's Sentire device is expected to complement Medtronic's existing Hugo system, enhancing its product offerings in surgical robotics.
