Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Strong Heart Device Demand

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 outlook, driven by soaring demand for heart devices and strategic investments in robotics.
Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has been raised to $5.94 from $5.90, while the upper end remains at $6.
Strategic Investments and Partnerships
In a strategic move to bolster its portfolio, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Further expanding its capabilities, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the significance of these investments, noting the low penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets, which stands at less than 1%. Martha described Cornerstone's Sentire device as complementary to Medtronic's existing Hugo device, highlighting the company's focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry.
Cardiovascular Segment Drives Growth
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment experienced a significant boost, with quarterly sales soaring 19.5% to $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which treats irregular heart rhythms and saw an 88% increase in sales. The company reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing estimates of $1.39 on $9.55 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's finance chief, mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future financial outlooks.
Focus on Emerging Technologies
Medtronic's strategic direction is underscored by its ongoing commitment to mergers and acquisitions, targeting medtech segments with substantial growth potential and large patient populations. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A," Martha stated, underscoring the company's prioritization of segments with both high growth and large market size.
