AI Summary

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by robust demand for cardiovascular devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections upwards, citing increased demand for its heart devices utilized in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, Medtronic raised the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94, while maintaining the upper limit at $6.

Strategic Investments and Collaborations

In a move to bolster its heart device portfolio, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, the company has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in several markets outside the United States.

Medtronic's CEO, Geoff Martha, emphasized the importance of these strategic investments during a post-earnings call, noting the potential for growth in emerging markets. He highlighted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in these regions remains below 1%, presenting significant opportunities for expansion.

Financial Performance and Market Dynamics

Medtronic reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales within its cardiovascular segment, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was primarily driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an impressive 88% surge. The company posted an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing market estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton noted that Medtronic received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been included in the company's outlook.

Martha reiterated the company's focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, emphasizing the vast patient pools and substantial market segments these areas represent. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A, prioritizing segments where we see large growth potential," he stated.
