Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Strong Heart Device Demand

Medtronic expects higher revenue growth in 2027, driven by demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 financial outlook, buoyed by robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. This adjustment reflects a growing confidence in the company's expanding product portfolio and strategic investments.
Financial Forecasts Revised Upward
On Tuesday, Medtronic announced an upward revision of its revenue growth forecast for fiscal 2027. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth to range between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast was raised from $5.90 to $5.94, while the upper limit remains at $6.
Geoff Martha, Medtronic's CEO, emphasized the broad-based performance across various business units and the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms as key factors underpinning the revised outlook. "What gives us confidence is not simply the strength of the quarter, but importantly, the breadth of performance across our businesses," Martha stated during a post-earnings call.
Strategic Investments in Heart and Robotics
In addition to its favorable financial outlook, Medtronic is making significant investments to bolster its position in the medical devices sector. The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the U.S.
Martha highlighted the potential of Cornerstone's Sentire device, which complements Medtronic's Hugo device, particularly in emerging markets where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery is currently below 1%. "We're prioritizing the higher growth segments of medtech that we have confidence that are going to be big segments," he added.
Cardiovascular Segment and Quarterly Performance
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an impressive 88% rise. The segment's strong performance contributed to an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on a revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data.
Medtronic's financial chief, Thierry Pieton, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future financial projections.
The company's strategic initiatives and strong quarterly performance underscore its commitment to innovation and growth in the medical device industry. With a focus on expanding its market presence and leveraging new technologies, Medtronic is well-positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for advanced cardiovascular solutions.
