AI Summary

Medtronic boosts 2027 revenue outlook as heart device demand surges, investing heavily in surgical innovations.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 forecasts upward, reflecting robust demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has also been raised to $5.94, while the upper limit remains at $6.

Investments in Cardiac and Surgical Innovations

In tandem with its optimistic financial outlook, Medtronic is committing significant investments to expand its medical technology portfolio. The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a firm specializing in heart-valve repair devices, and holds an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.

CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the strategic focus on high-growth sectors within medical technology, noting the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's existing Hugo system. Martha highlighted the potential for expansion in emerging markets, where the adoption of robotic soft tissue surgery remains below 1%.

Strong Cardiovascular Segment Performance

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% increase in demand. These devices are crucial in treating irregular heart rhythms, underscoring the increasing reliance on advanced cardiovascular solutions.

The company's financial results surpassed analyst expectations, with adjusted quarterly earnings per share at $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, compared to predicted figures of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Strategic Financial Management

Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future financial projections. The strategic management of tariffs and investments highlights Medtronic's careful financial planning as it navigates a competitive medtech landscape.
