Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Strong Heart Device Demand

Medtronic lifts 2027 forecasts, driven by robust demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial outlook, citing increased demand for its heart devices, which are pivotal in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company has adjusted the lower end of its profit forecast to $5.94 per share, up from $5.90, maintaining the upper limit at $6. Revenue growth projections have also been elevated to between 7.25% and 7.75%, compared to the previous range of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments in Medtech
In a move to strengthen its portfolio, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to purchase the company for $210 million. The firm also invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select international markets. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the under-penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets, indicating significant growth potential.
Martha emphasized Medtronic's focus on high-growth segments within the medical technology industry, targeting large patient pools and substantial market segments. These strategic investments align with the company’s vision to expand its influence in the medtech sector.
Strong Performance in Cardiovascular Segment
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a notable 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge in demand. This portfolio is essential for treating irregular heart rhythms, contributing significantly to the company's robust performance.
Despite the positive outlook, Medtronic's finance chief Thierry Pieton noted that while the company received tariff refunds nearly covering the duties paid during the quarter, these refunds have not been factored into future financial forecasts.
Medtronic's adjusted quarterly profit per share stood at $1.45, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39, on revenue of $9.76 billion, which also exceeded the anticipated $9.55 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Positioning for Future Growth
The company's strategic moves underscore its commitment to expanding its footprint in the medical technology landscape. By prioritizing investments in innovative technologies and high-demand markets, Medtronic aims to maintain its trajectory of growth and innovation. The recent financial adjustments reflect confidence in its diversified business approach and the potential of its new growth platforms.
