Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Strong Heart Device Demand

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by surging demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 revenue growth projections, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company has revised the lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. Annual organic revenue growth is now expected to range between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
In a strategic move, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the U.S. CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the importance of these investments, noting that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets is below 1%, with Cornerstone's Sentire device complementing Medtronic's Hugo system.
Financial Performance and Outlook
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a significant 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge. The company reported an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data.
During a post-earnings call, CFO Thierry Pieton mentioned that the company received tariff refunds almost covering the duties paid in the quarter, although future refunds are not factored into the current outlook. CEO Geoff Martha expressed confidence in the company's performance, highlighting the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms and the breadth of performance across various business segments.
