Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Strong Heart Device Demand

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by high demand for heart devices and strategic investments in robotics.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts upward, citing increased demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical technology giant announced the changes on Tuesday, highlighting the robust performance across its various business segments and the growing impact of its new growth platforms.
Financial Forecasts and Strategic Investments
The company has lifted the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper limit at $6. Additionally, Medtronic now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Medtronic's CEO, Geoff Martha, emphasized the company's confidence in its performance, driven not only by strong quarterly results but also by the significant contributions from new technology platforms. The company also announced an $80 million investment in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in certain international markets.
Growth in Cardiovascular Segment
The cardiovascular segment of Medtronic reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This surge was largely attributed to the success of its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an impressive 88% growth. Pulsed field ablation is a technology used to treat irregular heart rhythms, and its strong performance highlights the ongoing demand for advanced cardiovascular solutions.
The company's Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, noted that Medtronic received tariff refunds during the quarter, nearly offsetting the duties it paid. However, these refunds have not been factored into future financial outlooks.
Focus on Emerging Markets and Robotics
Martha pointed out that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains below 1%. Medtronic's recent investments, including the Sentire device from Cornerstone, are seen as complementary to its existing Hugo robotic surgery platform. The company is prioritizing segments with high growth potential and large patient populations, signaling a strategic focus on expanding its reach in the medtech sector.
In its recent earnings report, Medtronic disclosed an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
