AI Summary

Medtronic increases fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by high demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic announced an optimistic fiscal 2027 revenue outlook, attributing the boost to growing demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical device giant raised the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94, up from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6.

Heart Devices Propel Growth

The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, a rise from the previously projected 6.75% to 7.25%. This upward revision is largely fueled by the robust performance of its cardiovascular segment, which saw sales surge by 19.5% to $3.93 billion, bolstered by an 88% growth in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, designed for treating irregular heart rhythms.

Strategic Investments and Expansion

In a strategic move to expand its portfolio, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, the company invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.

CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the significance of these investments, noting the potential for increased penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets. He highlighted that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo system, underscoring the company's focus on high-growth segments.

Financial Performance and Market Outlook

For the latest quarter, Medtronic reported an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data. Medtronic's finance chief Thierry Pieton mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly matched the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future projections.

Martha stated, "What gives us confidence is not simply the strength of the quarter, but importantly, the breadth of performance across our businesses and the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms." The company's strategic focus on expanding its technological capabilities and tapping into large patient pools continues to drive its optimistic outlook for the coming years.
