AI Summary

Medtronic boosts its 2027 revenue forecast, fueled by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments in medtech.

Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 financial projections, driven by robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical technology giant raised the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. The company also improved its annual organic revenue growth outlook to a range of 7.25% to 7.75%, a boost from the previously projected 6.75% to 7.25%.

CEO Geoff Martha expressed confidence in the company's performance during a post-earnings call, emphasizing the broad contributions from various business segments as well as newer growth platforms. "What gives us confidence is not simply the strength of the quarter, but importantly, the breadth of performance across our businesses," Martha stated.

Strategic Investments in Medtech

In a strategic move, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. Martha noted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains below 1%, and Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo system.

The company's focus on mergers and acquisitions aims to prioritize high-growth segments in medtech, with large patient pools and significant market potential. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A... we're prioritizing the higher growth segments of medtech that we have confidence are going to be big segments," Martha explained.

Cardiovascular Segment Shows Strong Performance

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge in demand. These devices are used to treat irregular heart rhythms, a growing concern in cardiovascular health.

For the quarter, Medtronic reported an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the company's current outlook.
