AI Summary

Medtronic boosts 2027 forecasts, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial forecasts upward, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%. Alongside this, the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has been raised to $5.94 from $5.90, while the upper limit remains at $6.

Strategic Investments in Medical Technology

In a move to bolster its position in the medtech sector, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has allocated $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, obtaining distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in markets outside the United States.

CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the company's focus on rapidly growing segments within medtech, highlighting the importance of large patient pools and significant market segments. The penetration of robotic surgery in emerging markets remains under 1%, and Medtronic's collaboration with Cornerstone aims to address this gap by complementing its existing Hugo device.

Financial Performance and Market Growth

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, designed to treat irregular heart rhythms. The company posted an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing LSEG-compiled estimates of $1.39 per share and $9.55 billion in revenue.

Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds nearly covering the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds are not factored into the current outlook.

These developments reflect Medtronic's strategic emphasis on innovation and market expansion, as the company continues to leverage its expertise in cardiovascular technologies to maintain its competitive edge in the global medtech industry.
