AI Summary

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 outlook due to strong heart device demand, investing $780M in key partnerships.

Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, driven by heightened demand for its heart devices used in intricate cardiovascular procedures. The medical technology giant now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous range of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the company has adjusted the lower end of its per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper limit at $6.

CEO Geoff Martha expressed confidence in the company's performance, highlighting the strength across various business segments and the contributions from newer growth platforms. This optimism follows a robust quarter for Medtronic, with its cardiovascular segment seeing a 19.5% increase in sales, reaching $3.93 billion. The growth was significantly fueled by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to address irregular heart rhythms.

Strategic Investments in Heart and Robotics Technology

In a move to bolster its position in the medical device industry, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. The company is also venturing into the robotic surgery market with a $700 million investment in Cornerstone Robotics. This partnership grants Medtronic distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.

Martha noted the low penetration of robotic soft tissue surgery in emerging markets, which stands at less than 1%. He emphasized that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo system, aligning with the company's strategy to target high-growth, large-patient-pool segments.

Financial Performance and Outlook

Medtronic's latest financial report revealed an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.45 per share on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' predictions of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data. CFO Thierry Pieton mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly covered the duties paid during the quarter, though future refunds have not been factored into the current outlook.

The company's strategic focus on mergers and acquisitions reflects its commitment to reinforcing its presence in burgeoning sectors of the medtech industry. Medtronic's emphasis on expanding its portfolio through targeted investments underscores its plan to remain a leader in the field of advanced medical technologies.
