Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic ups its fiscal 2027 outlook, driven by strong heart device sales and strategic investments.
Medtronic has adjusted its fiscal 2027 projections upward, attributing the revision to increased demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company has set a new annual organic revenue growth target between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its earlier forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strong Performance in Cardiovascular Segment
During a recent earnings call, CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the broad-based performance across Medtronic's business units and the contributions from emerging growth platforms as key drivers of this optimistic outlook. The company's cardiovascular segment saw a notable 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely fueled by the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge.
Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing market expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data.
Strategic Investments and M&A Activity
In addition to its financial forecast, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. The medtech giant also invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.
Martha noted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains below 1%, and emphasized that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo system. "We're prioritizing high-growth segments with significant patient pools," Martha stated, underscoring the company's strategic focus.
Financial Adjustments and Future Prospects
Medtronic's CFO, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that the company received tariff refunds nearly offsetting the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future financial forecasts.
The company has revised the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per share profit forecast to $5.94, up from $5.90, while maintaining the upper end at $6. These adjustments reflect Medtronic's confidence in sustaining growth amid a robust demand for medical technologies and surgical procedures.
