Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic ups 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, fueled by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 projections, citing increased demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced on Tuesday that it expects annual organic revenue growth to range between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. Concurrently, the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast was raised to $5.94 from $5.90, while the upper end remains at $6.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
Alongside the forecast adjustments, Medtronic disclosed an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, the company has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in certain markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted that the integration of Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo robotic surgery platform, particularly in emerging markets where robotic surgery penetration is less than 1%.
Financial Performance and Market Confidence
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion, driven largely by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% growth. The company posted an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
CEO Geoff Martha expressed confidence in the company's diversified performance across its business units and emphasized the growing contributions from newer growth platforms. He stated, "What gives us confidence is not simply the strength of the quarter, but importantly, the breadth of performance across our businesses and the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms."
Financial Adjustments and Future Outlook
Medtronic's finance chief, Thierry Pieton, noted that the company received tariff refunds during the quarter which nearly offset the duties paid. However, these refunds have not been factored into future projections. The company continues its strategy of prioritizing high-growth segments within the medtech industry, targeting large patient pools and significant market segments.
Overall, Medtronic's adjustments to its fiscal 2027 outlook underscore its robust position in the medtech industry, driven by strategic investments and strong market demand for its heart devices.
