AI Summary

Medtronic increases fiscal 2027 projections, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections upward, anticipating robust growth in its heart device segment. The company announced on Tuesday its decision to raise the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. The adjustment reflects strong demand for heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures.

Strategic Investments and Growth

Medtronic is also making significant investments to bolster its cardiovascular portfolio. The company has committed $80 million to Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.

CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the importance of these strategic moves, stating, "We're prioritizing the higher growth segments of medtech that present large patient pools and big segments." Martha noted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains below 1%, highlighting the potential for growth.

Financial Performance and Market Response

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was significantly driven by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms. The company's adjusted quarterly per-share profit stood at $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data.

Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that the company received tariff refunds nearly equivalent to the duties paid during the quarter, although these refunds are not included in future forecasts.

Outlook for 2027

Looking ahead, Medtronic expects its annual organic revenue growth to range between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. The company remains optimistic about the breadth of its performance across various business segments and the contributions from newer growth platforms.

As Medtronic continues to navigate the evolving landscape of medical technology, its investments and strategic focus on high-growth segments are poised to drive substantial growth in the coming years.
