AI Summary

Medtronic boosts its 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, citing strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments in robotics and heart-valve repair.

Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 revenue growth outlook, driven by heightened demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, Medtronic raised the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, while maintaining the upper end at $6.

Strategic Investments in Robotics and Heart-Valve Repair

The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Medtronic also invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in selected markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's existing Hugo device, particularly in emerging markets where soft tissue robotic surgery penetration is below 1%.

Strong Performance Across Business Segments

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was significantly bolstered by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge in demand. Overall, Medtronic posted an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.

CEO Geoff Martha expressed confidence in the company's performance, citing not only strong quarterly results but also the diverse contributions from newer growth platforms. He emphasized Medtronic's strategy of prioritizing segments with large patient pools and high growth potential within the medtech industry.

Financial Outlook and Market Position

Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly covered the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been included in the company's financial outlook. The strategic investments and robust demand for heart devices underscore Medtronic's commitment to expanding its footprint in high-growth areas, positioning the company for sustained success in the coming years.
