AI Summary

Medtronic has elevated its fiscal 2027 outlook, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has adjusted its fiscal 2027 revenue growth projections, buoyed by increased demand for heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical device giant has updated its forecast to reflect annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previously projected 6.75% to 7.25% range. This upward revision is accompanied by a slight boost in the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast, now set at $5.94, while maintaining the upper limit at $6.

Strategic Investments and Market Expansion

In a move to bolster its portfolio, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. The company also committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the U.S.

CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the importance of these investments, noting the low penetration rate of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets. Cornerstone's Sentire, he highlighted, complements Medtronic's existing Hugo device. “We’re focusing on high-growth segments that cater to large patient pools,” Martha stated during a post-earnings call.

Cardiovascular Segment Leads Growth

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% rise in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was primarily driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% increase. The company's adjusted quarterly earnings per share stood at $1.45, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39, on revenues of $9.76 billion, compared to the forecasted $9.55 billion.

Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, he clarified that future refunds have not been factored into the current financial outlook.

Medtronic's strategic focus on expanding its innovative device offerings and penetrating new markets underscores its commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the medtech sector. As the demand for advanced heart devices continues to rise, the company positions itself to capitalize on these growth opportunities.
