Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 projections due to strong heart device sales, plans significant investments in robotics and heart-valve technologies.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections upward, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced an increase in its revenue growth outlook to between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previous range of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has also been raised from $5.90 to $5.94, with the upper end remaining at $6.
Strategic Investments in Medical Technology
In addition to its revised forecasts, Medtronic revealed plans to invest $80 million in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. This move aligns with Medtronic's strategy to expand its cardiovascular product offerings. Furthermore, the company has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in markets outside the U.S. Medtronic's CEO, Geoff Martha, highlighted the potential for growth in robotic surgery, particularly in emerging markets where penetration remains low.
Strong Performance in Cardiovascular Segment
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a significant 19.5% increase in sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was primarily driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an impressive 88% rise in demand. The technology is used to treat irregular heart rhythms, marking a substantial contribution to the company's overall performance. Medtronic's quarterly results exceeded expectations, with an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data.
Focus on High-Growth Segments
CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the company's focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, noting that Medtronic prioritizes areas with large patient pools and significant expansion potential. This strategic direction is evident in its recent investments and the strong performance across its business units. Medtronic's finance chief, Thierry Pieton, also mentioned that the company received tariff refunds during the quarter, which offset some of the duties paid, although future refunds have not been included in their financial projections.
