AI Summary

Medtronic boosts its 2027 revenue outlook, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections upward, citing a robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company has adjusted the lower end of its profit forecast from $5.90 to $5.94 per share, maintaining the upper limit at $6. Additionally, Medtronic now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.

Strategic Investments and Market Growth

In a move to bolster its portfolio, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. The firm has also committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the importance of these investments in expanding Medtronic's presence in high-growth segments of the medtech industry.

"We've maintained a steady cadence of mergers and acquisitions, focusing on segments with large patient pools and significant growth potential," Martha stated during a post-earnings call. He highlighted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains below 1%, positioning Medtronic's Hugo device and Cornerstone's Sentire as complementary solutions.

Strong Performance in Cardiovascular Segment

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms. The company's adjusted quarterly earnings stood at $1.45 per share on a revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data.

Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future projections. Medtronic's focus on innovation and strategic investments appears to be paying off, as the company capitalizes on increased adoption of new technologies and a growing demand for surgical solutions.
