AI Summary

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 outlook, driven by heart device demand and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 forecasts upward, citing strong demand for its heart devices, particularly those used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced on Tuesday that it expects annual organic revenue growth to reach between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast has been raised to $5.94, while the upper end remains at $6.

Strategic Investments in Heart Device Market

In a strategic move to strengthen its position in the heart device market, Medtronic has announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a maker of heart-valve repair devices. The company has also secured an option to acquire Pi-Cardia for $210 million. Moreover, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, gaining rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select international markets.

CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the company's confidence derived not only from a strong quarter but also from the broad performance across its business segments and the contributions from new growth platforms. He highlighted the potential for growth in soft tissue robotic surgery, particularly in emerging markets where penetration is currently less than 1%.

Impressive Cardiovascular Segment Performance

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an impressive 88% growth. The portfolio is used to treat irregular heart rhythms, a key area of expansion for Medtronic.

Overall, the company posted an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Financial Strategies and Market Dynamics

Medtronic's finance chief, Thierry Pieton, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties it paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the company's outlook. Martha stated that Medtronic continues to prioritize high-growth segments within the medtech industry, focusing on areas with large patient pools and significant market potential.

These developments align with the broader trend of increased adoption of new technologies in the medtech sector, driven by robust demand for surgical procedures. Medtronic's strategic investments and revised forecasts reflect its commitment to capitalizing on these opportunities and expanding its market presence.
