Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic ups fiscal 2027 outlook due to rising heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue projections upwards, driven by increased demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. On Tuesday, the company announced it would boost the lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast to $5.94, up from a previous $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6.
Strategic Investments and Market Growth
The company has been actively investing in new technologies to capitalize on the burgeoning demand for sophisticated medical devices. Medtronic has committed $80 million to Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has allocated $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
CEO Geoff Martha expressed confidence during a post-earnings call, attributing the positive outlook to the broad performance across various business sectors and the contribution from newer growth platforms. The robust demand for surgeries utilizing advanced technologies has significantly bolstered the company's prospects.
Financial Performance and Sector Developments
Medtronic reported quarterly sales in its cardiovascular segment rising by 19.5% to $3.93 billion. This growth was largely fueled by the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which treats irregular heart rhythms and saw an impressive 88% increase. The company's quarterly adjusted earnings per share were $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing market estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion revenue, according to LSEG-compiled data.
Finance chief Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, though these refunds have not been factored into future projections. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Outlook and Market Strategy
Martha highlighted the importance of targeting high-growth segments within the medical technology industry, emphasizing the significant patient pools in these areas. He noted the low penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets, which Medtronic aims to address through strategic acquisitions and partnerships.
The company's strategic direction and strong quarterly performance underscore its commitment to innovating within the healthcare sector, particularly in cardiovascular solutions. As Medtronic continues to expand its market presence, its investments in cutting-edge technologies are expected to drive further growth and profitability.
