Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic ups fiscal 2027 forecasts with strong heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 projections upward, bolstered by robust demand for its heart devices and strategic investments in the medical technology sector. The company announced an increase in its revenue growth outlook and adjusted profit forecast, reflecting optimism in the expanding market for cardiovascular solutions.
Heart Device Demand Drives Growth
The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, a jump from its previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. Medtronic's CEO, Geoff Martha, highlighted the widespread performance across its business units and contributions from new growth platforms as key confidence boosters. The demand for heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures has been a significant factor in this positive outlook.
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was driven by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, a technology used to treat irregular heart rhythms.
Strategic Investments in Medtech
Alongside its forecast adjustments, Medtronic announced a series of strategic investments aimed at enhancing its market position. The company has committed $80 million to heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.
CEO Geoff Martha noted the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's Hugo robotic system. He emphasized the low penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets, underscoring the potential for growth in these regions.
Financial Performance and Future Outlook
Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.45 per share on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data. The company's finance chief, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that recent tariff refunds nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, though future refunds have not been factored into the financial outlook.
As Medtronic continues to prioritize high-growth segments within the medtech industry, its strategic focus on large patient pools and significant market segments is expected to sustain its upward trajectory. The company's steady cadence of mergers and acquisitions is aimed at capturing substantial growth opportunities in the coming years.
