Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic boosts 2027 projections, driven by high demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medical technology giant Medtronic has raised its financial projections for fiscal year 2027, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company increased the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper limit at $6. Revenue growth is now expected between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from prior estimates of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in international markets outside the U.S.
CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the potential in emerging markets, noting that soft tissue robotic surgery penetration is less than 1% in these regions. He emphasized that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo platform, positioning the company for growth in large patient segments.
Financial Performance and Market Outlook
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was mainly driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% surge in demand. The company reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton noted that Medtronic received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds are not included in the current outlook.
Future Growth Strategies
Medtronic is focusing on high-growth segments within the medical technology sector, aiming to capitalize on large patient pools. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A," CEO Martha stated, underscoring the company's strategy to prioritize promising areas in medtech.
With a strong quarterly performance and strategic investments, Medtronic is poised to maintain its momentum in the competitive medical devices market. The company's focus on innovation and market expansion continues to drive its optimistic outlook for the coming years.
