Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic increases 2027 forecasts, driven by robust heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic has adjusted its fiscal 2027 revenue projections upward, attributing the optimism to a rising demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced this strategic shift on Tuesday, citing a strong quarter and expanding contributions from newer growth platforms as key factors.
Investments in Heart Valve and Robotics
In a move to bolster its heart device portfolio, Medtronic has committed $80 million to Pi-Cardia, a maker of heart-valve repair devices, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, obtaining distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the potential of these investments, particularly noting the low penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets, which stands at less than 1%. He emphasized that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo device, enhancing their offerings in high-growth medtech segments.
Financial Performance and Forecast Adjustments
The company increased its lower-end forecast for adjusted per-share profit for fiscal 2027 to $5.94, up from a previous $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. Medtronic now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the earlier projection of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment experienced a significant 19.5% rise in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was primarily driven by an 88% increase in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, used for treating irregular heart rhythms.
Tariff Refunds and Market Outlook
Financial Chief Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these potential future refunds are not factored into Medtronic's current outlook.
Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Martha expressed confidence in the company's strategic direction, emphasizing a focus on high-growth medtech segments with large patient pools. The CEO underscored Medtronic's steady acquisition strategy, which aims to capitalize on emerging opportunities within the medical technology sector.
