Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic ups fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, fueled by robust demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial forecasts upward, driven by strong demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced an increase in its revenue growth expectations and adjusted profit projections, marking a positive outlook for the coming years.
Increased Demand for Cardiovascular Devices
Medtronic's decision to elevate its fiscal 2027 revenue growth forecast reflects the company's confidence in the expanding adoption of its heart devices. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has been raised to $5.94 from $5.90, while the upper end remains at $6. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previous range of 6.75% to 7.25%.
CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the broad performance across Medtronic's diverse business segments and the increasing contributions from new growth platforms as key factors for the forecast adjustment. The company reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales within its cardiovascular segment, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was significantly bolstered by the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an impressive 88% increase in demand.
Strategic Investments in Medical Technology
In addition to its revised forecasts, Medtronic is making strategic investments to bolster its market position. The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.
Martha noted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets is currently less than 1%, highlighting the potential for growth. The investment in Cornerstone Robotics is seen as complementary to Medtronic's existing Hugo device, positioning the company to capitalize on the growing demand for robotic surgery solutions.
Financial Performance and Market Outlook
Medtronic's recent financial performance exceeded expectations, with an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion. This surpassed analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's finance chief, mentioned that the company received tariff refunds nearly covering the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into the future outlook. Medtronic's ongoing strategy focuses on mergers and acquisitions, targeting high-growth segments within the medtech industry with large patient pools and significant market potential.
