Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Demand Surge

Medtronic ups fiscal 2027 predictions, citing strong heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic has raised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth and profit forecasts, driven by heightened demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previous 6.75% to 7.25% range. The lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast has also been increased to $5.94, while the upper end remains at $6.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
Medtronic has announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the U.S. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the low penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets, suggesting significant growth potential.
"We've had a steady cadence of M&A, prioritizing high-growth segments with large patient pools," Martha stated. These investments align with Medtronic's strategy to enhance its presence in the rapidly evolving medical technology sector.
Robust Cardiovascular Segment Performance
The company's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was significantly bolstered by the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge in demand. Medtronic’s overall quarterly revenue was $9.76 billion, with an adjusted per share profit of $1.45, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data.
Financial Maneuvering and Outlook
Medtronic's CFO Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds nearly covering the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future financial projections. The firm's strategic focus remains on leveraging its robust portfolio and expanding its market share in key therapeutic areas.
