Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Demand Surge

Medtronic ups fiscal 2027 revenue forecast, driven by strong heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial outlook upwards, buoyed by a surge in demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced a boost in its revenue growth projection to between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its earlier forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast was also raised to $5.94 from $5.90, while the upper end remains at $6.
Strategic Investments in Cardiac and Robotic Technologies
In addition to its optimistic financial forecast, Medtronic is making significant investments to bolster its position in the medical technology sector. The company has committed $80 million to heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with a future option to acquire it for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the U.S.
CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the importance of these strategic moves, noting that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets is currently under 1%. He described Cornerstone's Sentire device as a complementary addition to Medtronic's existing Hugo robotic surgery platform.
Robust Performance in Cardiovascular Segment
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an impressive 88% sales increase. These devices are used to treat irregular heart rhythms, further cementing Medtronic's strong position in the cardiovascular market.
The company's financial performance exceeded analysts' expectations, with an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion. These figures surpassed the estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Continued Confidence in Growth Segments
Medtronic's CFO, Thierry Pieton, remarked that the company received tariff refunds nearly covering the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds have not been factored into their financial outlook. CEO Martha highlighted the company's strategic focus on high-growth segments within medtech, particularly those with large patient pools and substantial market potential.
As Medtronic continues to prioritize investments in promising sectors, its enhanced fiscal forecasts reflect confidence in its growth strategy. The company's commitment to innovation and strategic acquisitions is expected to support sustained expansion in the coming years.
