AI Summary

Medtronic ups fiscal 2027 outlook, driven by strong heart device sales and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections upward, citing robust demand for its heart devices, which are integral to complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical technology giant announced this decision on Tuesday, reflecting confidence in its expanding product portfolio and market strategy.

Strategic Investments and Revenue Growth

In a strategic move, Medtronic has committed $80 million to Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, the company has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets. These investments align with Medtronic's focus on strengthening its position in high-growth medical technology sectors.

CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the company's broad performance across various business segments as a key factor in the revised forecasts. Medtronic now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.

Financial Performance and Market Strategy

Medtronic's financial chief, Thierry Pieton, noted that recent tariff refunds nearly offset the duties incurred during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the company's outlook. The revised forecast sets the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit expectation for fiscal 2027 at $5.94, up from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6.

The company reported a significant 19.5% increase in sales within its cardiovascular segment, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was propelled by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, a key treatment for irregular heart rhythms. Overall, Medtronic posted an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, as compiled by LSEG data.

Focus on Emerging Markets and Future Prospects

Martha emphasized the potential in emerging markets, where the adoption of robotic surgery is currently below 1%. The integration of Cornerstone's Sentire device is seen as complementary to Medtronic's existing Hugo system. "We've maintained a consistent strategy in mergers and acquisitions, targeting high-growth and large patient segments," Martha stated.

Medtronic's strategic investments and adjustments to its revenue forecasts underscore its commitment to leading in the medtech industry, particularly in cardiovascular care and robotic surgery.
