Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Demand Surge

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by robust demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has adjusted its fiscal 2027 financial projections upward, fueled by a surge in demand for its cardiovascular devices. The medical technology giant increased its expected annual organic revenue growth to a range of 7.25% to 7.75%, up from its prior estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the company lifted the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast for the fiscal year to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper end at $6.
Strategic Investments and Expansions
In a bid to strengthen its position in the cardiovascular market, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets. These strategic moves reflect Medtronic's focus on high-growth segments and large patient pools, according to CEO Geoff Martha.
Martha emphasized the increasing contributions from new growth platforms across Medtronic's businesses. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A, prioritizing the higher growth segments of medtech," he noted. The company's investments are aimed at expanding its capabilities in emerging markets, where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1%.
Strong Performance in Cardiovascular Segment
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a robust 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an impressive 88% rise. These devices are used in complex cardiovascular procedures, contributing significantly to the overall performance.
Medtronic's latest financial results exceeded expectations, with an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion. This surpassed analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data.
Financial Adjustments and Outlook
Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, highlighted that the company received tariff refunds that almost fully offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future forecasts. The company remains optimistic about its fiscal 2027 outlook, bolstered by the strength of its cardiovascular offerings and strategic market expansions.
Medtronic's strategic direction and financial adjustments demonstrate its commitment to capturing growth opportunities in the medical technology sector. With a focus on innovation and market expansion, the company aims to meet the increasing global demand for advanced cardiovascular solutions.
