AI Summary

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 outlook on robust demand for heart devices, investments in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections upward, driven by growing demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth of 7.25% to 7.75%, up from its earlier forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, it has adjusted the lower end of its profit forecast to $5.94 per share, maintaining the upper limit at $6.

Strategic Investments and Market Expansion

In a move to strengthen its market position, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a maker of heart-valve repair devices, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. The company has also committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the U.S.

CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the strategic significance of these investments, noting that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's Hugo system. Martha emphasized the potential for growth in the robotic surgery sector, particularly in emerging markets where penetration remains below 1%.

Cardiovascular Segment Performance

Medtronic's cardiovascular division reported a significant 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely fueled by the success of its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge. This technology is utilized in treating irregular heart rhythms, underscoring the company's strong performance across its business segments.

During a post-earnings call, Martha expressed confidence in the company's diverse performance and the contributions from newer growth platforms. The optimistic outlook is supported by a steady cadence of mergers and acquisitions, focusing on high-growth medical technology segments with large patient pools.

Financial Results and Future Outlook

Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.45 per share, exceeding analysts' estimates of $1.39. Revenue for the quarter stood at $9.76 billion, surpassing the projected $9.55 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Despite receiving tariff refunds that nearly offset duties paid during the quarter, Medtronic's finance chief Thierry Pieton indicated that future refunds have not been factored into the company's outlook. The company remains focused on expanding its footprint in high-growth markets, leveraging its robust portfolio of innovative medical technologies.
