Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecast Amid Heart Device Demand Surge

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, driven by heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial outlook upwards, citing increased demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced on Tuesday that it is raising the lower end of its expected adjusted per-share profit to $5.94 from the previous $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. It also increased its annual organic revenue growth projection to between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the earlier forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments and Market Growth
In addition to adjusting its forecasts, Medtronic revealed plans to invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices, with an option to purchase the firm for $210 million. Moreover, Medtronic has allocated $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.
Geoff Martha, CEO of Medtronic, expressed confidence in the company's performance, highlighting the broad contributions from various business segments and the potential of new growth platforms. The penetration of robotic surgery, particularly in soft tissue procedures, remains under 1% in emerging markets, according to Martha. He noted that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's Hugo robotic system, positioning the company well in high-growth medtech segments.
Robust Cardiovascular Segment Performance
Medtronic's cardiovascular division reported a significant 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This boost was largely driven by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% growth due to its effectiveness in treating irregular heart rhythms.
For the latest quarter, Medtronic posted an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Financial Adjustments and Future Prospects
Despite receiving tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, Medtronic's finance chief Thierry Pieton stated that future refunds are not factored into the company's outlook. The company's strategic focus remains on prioritizing high-growth medtech sectors with substantial patient populations.
As Medtronic continues to expand its footprint in the cardiovascular market and invest in innovative technologies, its enhanced fiscal 2027 forecasts reflect the company's strategic direction and the ongoing demand for advanced medical devices.
