Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecast Amid Heart Device Demand Surge

Medtronic lifts fiscal 2027 revenue outlook, driven by strong heart device demand and strategic investments in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.
Medtronic, a leading medical device company, has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts upward, citing strong demand for its heart devices. The company's optimistic outlook is supported by increased adoption of its cardiovascular technologies, which are integral to complex heart procedures.
Strategic Investments in Heart and Robotic Technologies
In a strategic move to bolster its portfolio, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer. The agreement includes an option to acquire Pi-Cardia for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
Medtronic's CEO, Geoff Martha, highlighted the potential of these investments to expand the company's presence in high-growth segments of the medtech industry. He noted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains below 1%, positioning Medtronic's Hugo device and Cornerstone's Sentire as complementary offerings poised for growth.
Financial Performance and Market Expansion
Medtronic has adjusted the lower end of its fiscal 2027 profit forecast from $5.90 to $5.94 per share, maintaining the upper limit at $6. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previously projected 6.75% to 7.25% range. This revision is largely driven by robust sales in Medtronic's cardiovascular segment, which saw a 19.5% increase to $3.93 billion, fueled by an 88% growth in its pulsed field ablation portfolio.
Medtronic's CFO, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that tariff refunds received during the quarter nearly offset the duties paid, though these are not factored into future projections. The company's recent quarterly performance exceeded expectations, with an adjusted earnings per share of $1.45 on $9.76 billion in revenue, compared to estimates of $1.39 and $9.55 billion respectively, according to data compiled by LSEG.
The company continues to focus on mergers and acquisitions to enhance its growth in the medtech sector, prioritizing areas with large patient pools and significant expansion potential. This strategy underlines Medtronic's commitment to advancing its market position through innovation and strategic partnerships.
