AI Summary

Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 forecasts, investing in heart devices and robotics to meet growing demand.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 projections upward, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in intricate cardiovascular procedures. The company anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast has also been raised to $5.94 from $5.90, with the upper limit holding steady at $6.

Strategic Investments in Heart and Robotic Devices

The medical technology giant announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices, along with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.

CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the strategic importance of these investments, noting that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1% in emerging markets. The collaboration with Cornerstone is expected to complement Medtronic’s existing Hugo robotic system.

Strong Performance Across Business Segments

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a significant 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms. The company reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.45 per share on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Geoff Martha emphasized the breadth of performance across Medtronic's business units and the increasing contributions from new growth platforms as key factors behind the optimistic outlook. He also noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds have not been factored into the fiscal outlook.

Focus on High-Growth Medtech Segments

Martha reiterated Medtronic’s focus on high-growth segments within the medical technology sector, emphasizing the potential for substantial market expansion. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A," Martha stated, adding that the company prioritizes segments with large patient pools and significant growth potential.

The strategic investments and revised forecasts underscore Medtronic’s confidence in its ability to capitalize on the growing demand for advanced cardiovascular and robotic surgical solutions. As the company continues to invest in emerging technologies, it positions itself to meet the increasing needs of healthcare providers and patients worldwide.
