Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 revenue outlook due to strong demand for heart devices, investing in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue forecast upwards, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced this strategic move on Tuesday, attributing the increase to the growing adoption of its medical technologies and a surge in surgical procedures.

Investment in Heart Device Technologies

In a significant investment, Medtronic has committed $80 million to Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices. The agreement includes an option to acquire Pi-Cardia for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in selected markets outside the United States.

Medtronic CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the company's confidence in its diverse business operations and the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms, which have driven the optimistic outlook for fiscal 2027. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A... we're prioritizing the higher growth segments of medtech that we have confidence will be large segments," Martha stated during a post-earnings call.

Financial Performance and Market Expansion

The company has adjusted the lower end of its per-share profit forecast for fiscal 2027 to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper end at $6. Medtronic now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the prior projection of 6.75% to 7.25%.

Medtronic's finance chief Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future forecasts. The company reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales within its cardiovascular segment, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, used for treating irregular heart rhythms, which saw an impressive 88% growth.

Quarterly Results Surpass Expectations

Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on a revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue, according to data compiled by LSEG.

The company’s strategic investments and expansions reflect its commitment to enhancing its product offerings and market reach, particularly in emerging markets where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains under 1%. Cornerstone's Sentire device is expected to complement Medtronic's existing Hugo device, strengthening its position in the robotic surgery market.
