Medtronic Increases 2027 Forecasts Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic raises its fiscal 2027 outlook, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue forecasts upward, attributing the change to the robust demand for its heart devices. The company, a leader in medical technology, anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast has also been raised to $5.94 from $5.90, while the upper end remains at $6.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
In a move to bolster its portfolio, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's existing Hugo device, emphasizing the potential for growth in emerging markets where robotic surgery penetration remains below 1%.
Strong Performance in Cardiovascular Segment
The company's cardiovascular segment reported a significant 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This surge was largely driven by the success of its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms and experienced an impressive 88% growth. Medtronic's overall performance exceeded expectations, with an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing the estimated $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Medtronic's CFO, Thierry Pieton, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future projections. The company's strategic focus remains on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, targeting large patient pools and significant market opportunities.
