Medtronic Increases 2027 Forecasts Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, driven by strong heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medical device giant Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 forecasts upward, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced the changes on Tuesday, projecting organic revenue growth to range between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments and Earnings Boost
Medtronic also raised the lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast for fiscal 2027 to $5.94, up from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the broad performance across various business segments and the increasing impact of new growth platforms as key factors for the positive outlook.
In addition to its forecast adjustments, Medtronic has made significant investments in the heart device sector. The company disclosed an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
Market Dynamics and Future Prospects
These strategic investments align with Medtronic's focus on expanding its presence in high-growth segments of the medtech industry. Martha noted the significant opportunity in emerging markets, where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1%. The addition of Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo robotic surgery system.
During the last quarter, Medtronic's cardiovascular segment experienced a 19.5% increase in sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms. The company reported an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data.
Financial Outlook and Industry Trends
Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although these future refunds are not included in the current forecast. The company's focus remains on prioritizing segments with large patient pools and high growth potential.
The medtech industry is witnessing a surge in the adoption of new technologies, driven by increased demand for surgical procedures. Medtronic's strategic investments and improved forecasts position it well to capitalize on these trends, reinforcing its leadership in the global medical device market.
