Medtronic Increases 2027 Forecasts Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic lifts fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by strong heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial forecasts upwards, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical technology giant now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments and Growth
In addition to boosting its forecasts, Medtronic announced significant investments in the medical device sector. The company plans to invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Moreover, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
Medtronic's CEO, Geoff Martha, highlighted the company's confidence in its growth trajectory, underscoring the importance of its diversified business performance and contributions from new growth platforms. "What gives us confidence is not simply the strength of the quarter, but importantly, the breadth of performance across our businesses and the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms," Martha remarked during a post-earnings call.
Financial Performance and Market Expansion
The company's cardiovascular segment experienced significant growth, with quarterly sales surging 19.5% to $3.93 billion. This increase was largely driven by the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is utilized in treating irregular heart rhythms and saw an impressive 88% growth.
Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data. The finance chief, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds are not included in the current outlook.
Focus on Emerging Markets and Technology
Martha also emphasized the potential of robotic surgery in emerging markets, where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains less than 1%. He noted that Cornerstone's Sentire robotic device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo device, enhancing its strategic position in the medtech sector.
Medtronic's strategic focus remains on high-growth segments within the medical technology arena, prioritizing areas with large patient populations and substantial market potential. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A... we're prioritizing the higher growth segments of medtech that we have confidence that are going to be big segments," Martha stated.
