Medtronic Increases 2027 Forecasts Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic raises 2027 forecasts on strong heart device demand, investing in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 projections upward, driven by robust demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company announced its decision to invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a maker of heart-valve repair devices, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
Increase in Revenue and Profit Forecasts
In a recent announcement, Medtronic raised the lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast for fiscal 2027 to $5.94, up from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous range of 6.75% to 7.25%. This adjustment reflects the strong demand for Medtronic's cardiovascular offerings, particularly those used in complex procedures.
CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the comprehensive performance across Medtronic's various business segments as a key factor in confidence for future growth. "What gives us confidence is not simply the strength of the quarter, but importantly, the breadth of performance across our businesses and the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms," Martha stated during a post-earnings call.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
Medtronic's strategic investments in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics align with its focus on expanding in high-growth medtech segments. The company views these investments as pivotal to capturing larger patient pools in emerging markets, where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1%.
Martha highlighted the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device with Medtronic's existing Hugo robotic system. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A... we're prioritizing the higher growth segments of medtech," he noted, underscoring the company's strategy to target significant market opportunities.
Strong Quarterly Performance
Medtronic reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales within its cardiovascular segment, totaling $3.93 billion. This growth was largely propelled by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms and experienced an 88% surge in demand.
The company's adjusted quarterly per share profit was reported at $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data.
Despite receiving tariff refunds that nearly covered duties paid during the quarter, Medtronic's finance chief Thierry Pieton stated that future refunds have not been factored into the company's current outlook.
