Medtronic Increases 2027 Forecasts Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by strong demand for heart devices. Investments in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics bolster growth.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth projections upwards, reflecting robust demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company now anticipates organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its prior forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, Medtronic adjusted the lower end of its profit forecast to $5.94 per share, maintaining the upper end at $6.
Strategic Investments in Heart and Robotic Devices
In a strategic move, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a maker of heart-valve repair devices, with an option to purchase the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha noted that the integration of Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo surgical system, particularly in emerging markets where robotic surgery adoption remains below 1%.
Strong Performance in Cardiovascular Segment
The company's cardiovascular division reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, totaling $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms. The performance of this segment underscores Medtronic's strategy to focus on high-growth areas within the medical technology sector.
Financial Outlook and Market Position
Medtronic's financial chief, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that recent tariff refunds nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although these refunds have not been factored into the company's future outlook. The company reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.45 per share on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the importance of expanding in segments with large patient bases and high growth potential. Medtronic's consistent strategy of mergers and acquisitions highlights its commitment to leading the medical technology industry by targeting significant market segments.
