Medtronic Increases 2027 Forecasts Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic raises its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, fueled by strong demand for cardiovascular devices.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections upwards, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments in Cardiovascular and Robotic Technologies
The medical device giant announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing the rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select international markets. This aligns with CEO Geoff Martha's strategy to focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry.
Martha emphasized the significance of these investments, noting that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains below 1%. The addition of Cornerstone's Sentire device is seen as complementary to Medtronic's existing Hugo platform, potentially expanding their market reach.
Financial Performance and Market Dynamics
In the latest quarter, Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by an 88% surge in sales of its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms. The company exceeded market expectations with an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.45 per share on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales.
Medtronic's CFO Thierry Pieton mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, though future refunds have not been factored into the company's outlook. Despite these refunds, the company remains focused on its growth strategy and long-term profitability.
Outlook and Industry Trends
The increased forecasts underscore Medtronic's confidence in its expanding portfolio and the growing demand for advanced medical technologies. The company's strategic moves highlight a commitment to investing in areas with significant growth potential and large patient populations.
Medtronic's approach reflects a broader trend in the medical technology sector, where companies are increasingly adopting new technologies and expanding into emerging markets to drive growth. This focus on innovation and strategic acquisitions positions Medtronic to capitalize on the evolving healthcare landscape.
