Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by robust demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 forecasts upward, buoyed by increasing demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medtech giant announced on Tuesday that it now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, compared to its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.

Strategic Investments and Market Expansion

In addition to the revised forecast, Medtronic revealed plans to invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. The company has also allocated $700 million towards Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.

Geoff Martha, CEO of Medtronic, expressed confidence in the company's strategy during a post-earnings call. "Our confidence stems not only from the strength of this quarter but also from the performance across our businesses and the contributions from newer growth platforms," he stated.

Financial Performance and Market Growth

Medtronic's latest financial results reflect strong performance, with quarterly sales in its cardiovascular segment surging 19.5% to $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by an 88% increase in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, used to address irregular heart rhythms.

The company reported an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45, surpassing analysts' estimates of $1.39, on revenue of $9.76 billion, beating expectations of $9.55 billion according to LSEG-compiled data.

Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's finance chief, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into the future outlook.

Focus on Emerging Markets

Martha highlighted the potential in emerging markets, where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1%. He emphasized the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's existing Hugo device, underscoring the company's focus on high-growth segments with substantial patient pools.

"We've maintained a steady pace of mergers and acquisitions, prioritizing segments within medtech that promise not only high growth but also large patient bases," Martha added.
