AI Summary

Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 projections, driven by strong demand for cardiovascular devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has raised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth outlook, buoyed by robust demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company announced a revised annual organic revenue growth forecast of 7.25% to 7.75%, an increase from the previously projected 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast was also increased to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper end at $6.

CEO Geoff Martha attributed this optimistic outlook to the company's broad performance across various business segments and the increasing impact of new growth platforms. Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a significant 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This surge was largely driven by an 88% growth in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, a key component in treating irregular heart rhythms.

Strategic Investments and Acquisitions

Medtronic also announced plans to invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, the firm has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in selected international markets. Martha highlighted the potential of Cornerstone's Sentire device, particularly in emerging markets where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1%.

These strategic moves align with Medtronic's focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, targeting large patient pools and significant market opportunities. "We've maintained a steady pace of mergers and acquisitions, prioritizing areas with substantial growth potential," Martha stated.

Financial Performance and Future Prospects

For the quarter, Medtronic reported an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data. The company's financial chief, Thierry Pieton, noted that tariff refunds received during the quarter nearly offset the duties paid, though future refunds have not been included in the company's forecasts.

As Medtronic continues to capitalize on the rising demand for advanced cardiovascular solutions, the company's strategic investments and broadened market reach are expected to sustain its growth trajectory.
